The Japanese word for octopus, "tako," is written with the characters for "many blessings" (tako), and is considered an auspicious food used in New Year's dishes and celebratory occasions. It's also said to be lucky because its eight legs symbolize "ever-expanding prosperity." This is an Ito-ya exclusive design tenugui (Japanese hand towel). It's dyed using the traditional Japanese dyeing technique called "chusen," which has been practiced since the Meiji era. This traditional dyeing method results in beautiful dyeing on both sides, and each piece is carefully finished by skilled artisans. The way the fabric softens and the colors gradually change with use is one of the unique charms of a tenugui. It can be used for a variety of purposes, such as a handkerchief, scarf, dishcloth, dish towel, placemat, or lunch box wrap.
